How to Winterize Your Hose Bibs

If you live in a home with hose bibs outside, you will need to winterize them before the outside temperature gets too cold This means shutting the water OFF from the inside and turning ON the outside bibs to let them drain. This can prevent thousands of dollars in pipe freeze damage.

Step 1: Locate and turn OFF the shut-off valves inside your house.

These are usually located in your basement in the utility room, or behind a plastic cover on a wall. There is usually one shut-off valve for each outside hose bib. If you have 2 bibs outside, you need to locate both shut-off valves. Turn the valves completely off.

Here is an example of the shut-off valves.

Step 2: Remove the hose (if any) from your hose bib

Step 3: Drain the exterior hose bibs

Turn on the exterior hose bibs and let the water drain out. If you shut off the water from the inside correctly, the water should slow and eventually stop. Let the bibs drain out completely.

Step 4: You’re done!

While you’re at it, this is also a good time to check your smoke alarm batteries and change your HVAC air filter if you haven’t done so lately.
